LEDs can lose their brightness - From our Friends at Signal Mate

LED Navigation Lights

  Signal Mate
  • LEDs can lose their brightness.
  • May no longer be the nautical miles specified.
  • Look bright up close, but not from far away.
  • Sold as 3 nautical miles, but no longer meet USCG/IMO nautical miles requirements.

In order for High Brightness LEDs to last and work properly, they require constant current drivers, plus proper thermal management.

All of Signal Mate LED navigation lights have both.

Constant current drivers ensure a constant light output (proper candelas to maintain USCG/IMO nautical miles requirements) regardless of battery loads, or as the battery charge decreases.

A constant current driver varies the voltage across the electronic circuit in order to keep and maintain a constant electrical current. This makes sure that no matter the change in voltage, the current driven to the LEDs will remain at a steady, desired level.

With a constant current source, even as the voltage changes with loads or temperature the driver keeps the current steady while not over driving the LED and preventing thermal runaway which decreases the LED life and output.

Tri-Color & Anchor combination light - Signal Mate has four:

One for a 3 wire installation (model# TRIANC3).
One for a 2 wire installation (model# TRIANC2).
Both can come with a photo diode for auto on/off (model# TRIANC3P, TRIANC2P).

3 wire verses 2 wire installations:
A 3 wire installation is used for replacing a 3 wire incandescent Tri Anchor when the wires are in good condition. The 3 wire requires two switches/breakers on the distribution panel.

Note: The 3 wire Tri-Color & Anchor light cannot be used on a 2 wire installation.

The 2 wire light is used when upgrading from an anchor light to a Tri-Color & Anchor when the wires are known to be in good condition. The 2 wire Tri-Color & Anchor light comes with a Double Pole, Double Throw (DPDT) center off reversing switch that will need to be installed.

Switch and Bracket included.

SignalMate Tip for the month

Navigation lights depend on good wiring.

When your mast is down, it is a good time to evaluate the wiring going up the mast. Wires degrade over time regardless of usage. Wires are subject to salt water, and movement which causes chafing.  Therefore, approximately every 10 to 15 years, it is recommend to replace the wiring.
